Summit Old Guard - September 14 Trip to Milford, PAHave you ever taken a trip and gone through a town and paid no attention to it? Possibly you have gone through this town countless times and never stopped or had lunch or taken in the scene. Milford Pennsylvania may be one such town. It is the county seat of Pikes County Pennsylvania with a population of around 1,200. The Trips Committee of the Old Guard want to take you there and discover its past. The town may surprise you. Milford Pennsylvania was founded in the 1700s and became a popular summer retreat in the 19th century for New York families escaping the heat of New York City. Reportedly it also was a haven for the French who were deposed by the exile of Napoleon Bonaparte. It is located near the banks of the Delaware River across from New Jersey and close to the New York border. Grey Towers in Milford was the summer home of Gifford Pinchot, twice the Governor of Pennsylvania and the founder of the US Forest Service under President Theodore Roosevelt. ![]() Grey Towers in Milford, Pennsylvania Another landmark in Milford is the historic Hotel Fauchère. It was established in the 1850's by the Chef of Delmonico’s, the famous restaurant in New York City dating back to 1837 which still thrives today. ![]() Hotel Fauchère in Milford, Pennsylvania Trip Details Our trip to Milford Pennsylvania will include a guided tour of Grey Towers, a national historic site and the conference center for the US Forest Service. The estate grounds feature many different trees that may be of interest to visitors. We will then enjoy a three-course lunch at the Hotel Fauchère with a talk about the town by a member of the Milford County Preservation Trust. After lunch, you will be given the opporunity to visit the Pike County Historical Society Museum at The Columns, the home of the Lincoln Flag (a story unto itself), browse the various antique shops in town, or possibly tour some of the buildings discussed at lunch. We will leave New Providence at 9:00 AM sharp in front of the New Providence Municipal Center and plan to return by 5:00 PM. Guests are welcome.
